Rose Elliot is a sales representative at Jorie’s located in Sault Ste. Marie.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Opening and closing the store. Duties consist of cleaning the store such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, making sure all merchandise is straightened and also having the dressing rooms properly cleaned for our clients. Mannequins get changed every week and last but not least that we satisfied our customers with their needs. We also received merchandise, steamed them, and merchandised them.

What was the education and training needed for your job? Any additional training for your current position?

The store at one time chose ladies of different backgrounds which made things interesting to learn about other cultures. Now it is very minimal. We have a staff of three, sometimes four. No real training other than cash and computer.

Why and when did you choose this career? What have you learned since you started?

I really enjoy working with the public. My first job was at a candy store. I was in retail in my 40’s until now.

What skills do you have that make you great at your job?

It’s all about personality. You need to make people comfortable in that environment. When you get to know your customers you know their needs.

What is the biggest thing you have learned on the job?

Working with all-woman can be a challenge.

What is the best part of your job?

Our clientele.

What is something challenging about your job?

When the store is not busy.

What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing the career?

It could be a very fun workplace. People that shop are generally happy and know what they want. Never be pushy. Make sure they leave happy and wanting to come back.
