Resources for Employees Experiencing Layoffs

In addition to events and workshops, the following resources can help you navigate the transition after a layoff or career change. These supports provide guidance related to income, employment, training, and overall well-being.


Steelworker POWER Action Centre
The United Steelworkers (USW) and the Canadian Skills Training and Employment Coalition (CSTEC)

Location: 68 Dennis Street, Sault Ste. Marie,
Drop-in Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (week of December 15)
January: Extended operational hours will be offered.

Services Provided
The POWER Action Centre offers comprehensive transition assistance to help individuals re-enter the workforce and navigate the challenges of job loss.

Services include: 

  • Job Search Assistance: Help with resume writing and finding new employment.
  • Training Information: Guidance on short-term training like micro-credential programs and long-term options such as apprenticeships.
  • Financial & Benefits Guidance: Information on Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility, exploring early retirement options, and understanding collective agreements and severance.
  • Personal Support: A safe, peer-driven drop-in location where workers can talk to people who understand the stress and trauma of job loss.
  • Community Referrals: Connecting individuals with other relevant community agencies and resources.
